Pearson and the University of Leicester are pleased to announce plans to build a PTE Academic test centre on the university campus. Contracts have been signed by senior management from both parties as part of an ongoing strategic partnership. Pearson and the University of Leicester have previously agreed to create further test centres around the world and to explore PTE Academic distance-learning courses.
Roger Smith, director of the University of Leicester’s English Language Teaching Unit, said: ‘Having an on-campus PTE Academic centre is an important step forward in our engagement with international students. The University of Leicester and PTE Academic are committed to secure, fair and reliable testing. Our ongoing agreements should provide major new opportunities for thousands of students, as we work together to make English language learning and assessment more accessible around the world.’
Pearson and Leicester previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will see them opening a series of world-class English language teaching and testing centres. The first test centre activated was located at the University of Kurdistan Hewler in Erbil, and opened on 15th January 2014. Other locations will be sited in Iraq in conjunction with the University of Kufa (Al-Najaf Province, Iraq) and Soran University (Kurdistan). These tripartite agreements allow the Leicester / Pearson partnership to provide opportunities for thousands of Iraqi students.
Kate Holden, General Manager, Pearson ELT, said, ‘We are pleased to be working with University of Leicester on a range of projects to help bring English language assessment to a wide range of learners. By providing PTE Academic test centres, we can help a greater number of students prove their English-language ability, as required for study and immigration. ’
Both Pearson and Leicester are committed to increasing choice and access for students wishing to engage in English education and assessment opportunities in developing countries. PTE Academic was developed to fulfill the need for an English language proficiency test that more accurately measures the communication skills of international students in an academic environment, helping students on the road to international success. PTE Academic is widely recognised by universities, colleges, government agencies, training providers and professional associations across the world.
Through these agreements, the University of Leicester will lend their significant expertise in the development of English language provision. Established in 1921, the University of Leicester has been described by Times Higher Education as ‘Elite without being elitist’. The University of Leicester is ranked in the top 2% of universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings and THE World University Rankings.
