An important message for PTE test takers 

We are aware of a scam targeting PTE test takers involving a third party offering the test at a reduced rate and making payment on behalf of test takers.  This has resulted in a small number of individuals being prevented from testing and/or receiving results where Pearson has identified that fraudulent payments have been attempted. If you are intending to ask another person or organization to book and pay for your test, please be aware that if there are problems with the payment made for your test, it may result in your results being canceled and you being barred from taking the test in future.  We understand this can be distressing so please, if you are intending to ask another person or organization to make your booking, make sure that you know and trust them. What is PTE Academic?

The fast and fair English test

PTE Academic is a computer-based language test that provides the most unbiased and secure proof of a candidate’s English skills for university, professional and migration applications. It is the fastest, computer-based English test and allows you to demonstrate the full range of your language skills. PTE Academic assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing – all via a computer in a single three-hour test session. To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test centre. You will use a computer and a headset to listen to, read and respond to questions. Use of genuine academic materials

PTE Academic uses genuine content to make it more authentic. It is taken from real-life situations that test takers would encounter in an academic environment. Reading texts in PTE Academic include study texts of academic interest and texts related to all aspects of student life. The test also includes genuine academic lectures rather than actors reading scripts or other simulated materials. Question writers for PTE Academic are required to use actual texts as stimulus material and no question without a source reference is accepted. This demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that students are better prepared to use their English for academic study anywhere in the world.

Suitable for use internationally

PTE Academic delivers real-life measures of test takers’ language ability to institutions requiring an agreed standard of proficiency in international academic English. An international character is ensured by selecting texts and settings encountered in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Using the main varieties of English ensures that all test takers are on an equal footing. Tests that use only one specific English variety put test takers not familiar with that variety at a clear disadvantage.

Furthermore, PTE Academic is the only academic English test to include non-native English accents. This reflects the diversity of English that students are likely to experience at any university where English is the medium of instruction, and where students will be taught by professors and teaching assistants who are not native speakers of English. This use of international varieties of English and non-native accents demonstrates that PTE Academic is highly relevant to today’s modern international academic institutions.

All national variations of language are considered correct in the PTE Academic test as long as test takers use the same spelling conventions consistently in their responses.

The test format

The test session takes three hours and consists of three parts: speaking and writing (completed together), listening, and reading. There is an optional 10-minute break between the reading and listening parts. During the test, you will find twenty different question styles, ranging from multiple choice to essay writing and interpreting information.

Do I need to know about a specific subject to take the test?

No. PTE Academic is a test of your English ability in Academic settings. The test covers a range of subjects within the question content but you are not being tested on these subjects.

Do I need computer skills to take the test?

You do not need any special computer skills to take PTE Academic. However, it may be beneficial to familiarize yourself with the technical set up of the test.

PTE Academic is taken using a QWERTY keyboard. This is where the letters on the top line spell out ‘QWERTY’. If you are not used to this type of keyboard, it may help to practice with one before you take the test.

Do I have to take PTE Academic in my home country?

Is there a difference between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI?

There is no difference between the content and scoring of the two tests. However, if you are applying for a UK Visa you must sit PTE Academic UKVI, due to slight differences in the test registration process. Only the UKVI version will provide you with a SELT Unique Reference Number (URN) which you will need for your visa application.

What kind of identification document (ID) do I need to bring?

Please check the ID Policy to see what form of ID is accepted for your test. A passport is the preferred form of ID in most countries.

Verify that your passport/form of ID will be valid on the date of your test, including the spelling of your name. If your passport has expired, or if your name does not match our records, you will be turned away from the test center. Refunds are not given if you are turned away from the test center due to an invalid ID. A passport is the most widely accepted form of ID.

If you have already booked a PTE test in the past, you will not be able to change your personal details online. In order to change your details, please submit the “Update my personal information” form. You will be contacted if any additional information is required. Requesting special accommodations

Please read the following information carefully as it contains instructions on how to make requests for special accommodations when taking the PTE Academic test.

Approval process

Any accommodation request (including special requirements or access arrangements) must be submitted using our dedicated form and approved prior to booking a test. Please sign in or create a new My PTE account by going to pearsonpte.com and clicking on Sign in. In the Personal Information section, please check the box when asked if you any have special requirements. You will then be taken to a link to complete an Accommodations Request form. Please refer to the test taker handbook for further details.

If you selected the Accommodation box by mistake, and you are unable to book your test via your account then please read carefully. All you have to do is to untick the special need box under Personal Information section. In case you are unable to change the settings and untick the box, please submit this form and leave a clear note in the text field that you do not require special accommodation and you were not able to change your settings. We can only remove the block off in if you cannot do it via your account.

Your request will be assessed, and you will be notified of the outcome within 72 hours of your request being received. We aim to schedule a test based on your preference, but it may be that we cannot offer your requested date. We may only be able to offer a test date with your accommodation request within 2-6 weeks of your preferred date, depending on what is being requested, center availability, and other factors.

While we make every effort to allow you to sit the PTE Academic at your chosen center, you may be required to attend another test center in a different location. Not all test centers are able to offer the same access arrangements, so requests in advance help us direct you to the closest available, suitable center.

Please note: if you have already scheduled your test, we may not be able to provide the requested accommodation for you on your scheduled test date or venue. In such cases, you may need to cancel or reschedule your test and pay the rescheduling fee.

Be sure that the spelling of your name on the Accommodation Request form matches the name on the identification you will present on the day of your test. If this information does not match, you will not be admitted to the test center, and you will lose your test fee. Please ensure that you leave sufficient time before the date on which you would like to take the test and do not book your test until your accommodation request is confirmed.

Comfort aids

You can find this list within our test taker handbook under special needs section which shows the comfort aids that do not require pre-approval. They will be allowed in the testing room upon visual inspection by the Test Centre staff. Visual inspection will be done by examining the item without directly touching it (or the candidate) and without asking the candidate to remove the item, unless otherwise stated below.

Booking your test

Check the ID policy before you register or book your test

The ID Policy shows what forms of ID are accepted in your region. A passport is the only acceptable form of ID in most countries. If you do not produce the required ID on test day you will not be allowed into the test room and will lose your test fee.

If you are under the age of 18

You must be at least 16 years old to sit PTE Academic. If you are 16 or 17 years old, parental/guardian consent must be provided before you can book a test. Once given, this consent is valid until you turn 18.

Parent/guardian consent can be requested in three ways:

  • SMS message to parent/guardian’s mobile number
  • Email to parent/guardian’s email address
  • Downloadable form that is signed by parent/guardian

In order to choose from the above options, please sign into your My PTE account by going to pearsonpte.com and clicking on Sign In. In the Personal Information section, please select to have your consent gained either through an SMS message, an email or through a downloadable form.

If you choose the “Downloadable form” option, a copy of the form will be available for you to download once you have completed your account creation. You will then need to upload a signed copy of your downloaded form. Your form will then be reviewed by our Customer Support Team and you will be notified of the outcome within 24-48 hours.

Creating an account

To book PTE Academic, you must create a My PTE account. You will receive an email within 48 hours with your login details. Never create a duplicate account as you will not be able to make a booking if a duplicate account is identified.

Use a valid and secure email address as this email address is where you will receive any correspondence relating to your test booking.

Name instructions

You must spell your legal name exactly as it appears on the identification you will present at the test center. If there is not an exact match, you will not be able to take your test and you will not be reimbursed for any fees paid.

  • If you only have one name, enter it in the Last Name/Surname/Family name field and enter a full stop (.) in the “First Name” field.
  • Use roman characters throughout.
  • First/Given Names (including middle names): always spell your first and middle names as they appear on your government issued ID.
  • Last name/Surname/Family Name: always spell as it appears on your government issued ID.

Booking your test

Once you have created your My PTE account, you can sign in and schedule your test.

After booking, if you do not receive a confirmation email within 2 working days, please check your junk or spam email folders.

Common registration questions

  • My given and family names are the same. What should I enter into the registration form?Your name should exactly match your ID. If you only have one name (that is both your given name and family name) enter it in the “Last Name/Surname/Family Name” name field. Enter a period/full stop in the “First Name/Given Name” field.
  • My name is too long to fit the space on the form. What should I enter into the registration form?Enter as much of your name as you can. Then fill out the Update your personal information form at least 3 working days before your test day so we know there will be a difference between the name you register with and the name on your ID. If your name on your test registration does not match your ID, you will not be allowed to take your test.
  • What happens if my ID shows a different name to the one I registered with? Fill out the “Update your personal information” form at least 3 working days before your test day so we know there will be a difference between the name you register with and the name on your ID. If your name on your test registration does not match your ID, you will not be allowed to take your test.

Methods of payment

The full fee must be paid when you book your test. If payment is not made in the currency specified for the country where you intend to take your test, your registration or request for service will not be processed and your payment will be rejected and / or returned to you.

Accepted forms of payment are: credit card (Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, or JCB®) or debit card (Visa® or MasterCard® only). We do not accept PayPal. You can use a card that is registered in a different name (e.g. a parent’s credit card.). Please note, we can only process refunds to the card which was used for payment.

If your credit card is declined, your appointment will not be processed. You will be responsible for scheduling your test appointment again using a valid form of payment.

If you have received a voucher you may apply it to the test fee. However, you may not use it to pay a rescheduling fee or receive a refund.

Booking confirmation

After booking, if you do not receive a confirmation email within 2 working days, please check your junk or spam email folders. We do not resend booking, rescheduling and cancellation email notifications anymore as it is visible under the test taker’s account. We can only resend payment confirmation emails by visiting your account under Activity and click on View Receipts. We can also resend these confirmation emails via Admin Console under Activity on View Receipts.

Review your confirmation email to ensure your name is listed exactly how it is on the identification you intend to show on the day of your test.

Update your personal information (name, date of birth, citizenship, address)

You must enter all of your personal information (legal name, date of birth, country of citizenship) exactly as it appears on your identification document.

Merge multiple accounts

It is not permitted to create multiple accounts to take the PTE Academic test. If multiple accounts are identified, you will not be able to continue with your booking until these accounts have been merged.

If multiple accounts are identified by the system, you will be notified by a message on your My PTE homepage. A case will be raised on your behalf by the system, which will be reviewed by our Customer Support agents.

If the Customer Support team recognize a genuine multiple account, they will merge the accounts on your behalf, and you will be able to proceed with your booking as normal.

I haven't received my PTE Academic score

Test results are typically available within 5 days. Occasionally, scores may be returned in less than 5 days. Seldomly, results may be delayed. As soon as your scores are made available, you will receive an email.

I have not yet received my score. What should I do?

  • 5 days or fewer since your test: We kindly ask that you wait patiently. You will receive an email from PTE when your score is ready to be released. However, you can log into your account at any time.
  • Over 5 days since your test: We recommend checking your junk or spam email folders as the email may be there. You will be able to log into your account at any time. If you still have not received your score after 5 days from your test, we kindly ask that you wait patiently. You will receive an email from PTE when your score is ready to be released.

Why could my score take longer than 5 days?

There are a number of reasons why a score may take over 5 days. These can include:

  • Certainty: Our system sometimes flags results for additional review which can take more time. Because PTE Academic is used to make important decisions, it is important that we get your score right every time and this can take extra time.
  • Security: Before releasing a score, we need to ensure the person that took the test is who they say. Our biometric security systems may have identified a security issue and that triggered an investigation.

Are there tips for getting a faster score?

Your PTE Academic score will be returned as soon as it has been scored. There are a few things you can do to reduce the chance of delay:

  • Follow all instructions carefully when creating your account and booking your test.
  • Create your account using a personal email that you check regularly so we can communicate with you directly.

My score report is blank:

If you are notified that your score report was available, but you cannot see it, or it says, “Technical problems are preventing us from displaying candidate photographs at this time”, please try running your report again later. Your score will soon be available in the next 24 hours. If it is still not available after 24 hours, please fill out the form below.

Due to the nature of your request, we highly recommend that you use our Write to Us contact form below. As this specific enquiry requires a designated team, our phone and live chat options will only be able to create a case on your behalf which may cause further delay.

I cannot log in to my account

If you are having problems accessing your My PTE account, please go to pearsonpte.com and click on Sign in. Click on the link at the bottom of the screen that says “Forgotten your username or password?

If you click on “Forgot your password?” then you will have to enter your username/email and we will send you a reset link. If you have forgotten your password, you will be able to reset your password straight away.

If you click on “Forgot your username?” then you will have to contact our Customer Support via our Contact Us page with your security questions ready have your identity verified, before your username will be released to you.

Rescheduling or cancelling a test

Rescheduling or cancelling your test:

If your plans or availability change, you may reschedule or cancel your appointment at any time. We highly recommend that you do this as soon as possible to reduce the cancellation fee.

The easiest way to cancel or reschedule your test is through your My PTE account.

Online: Login to your account:

  • Sign into your account with your username and password.
  • Once you have successfully logged in click on ‘Reschedule’ or ‘Cancel’ on the appointment information on your homepage.
  • You will receive an email confirming the change to your test booking.
  • We do not resend booking, rescheduling and cancellation email notifications anymore as it is visible under the test taker’s account. We can only resend payment confirmation emails by visiting your account under Activity and click on View Receipts. We can also resend these confirmation emails via Admin Console under Activity on View Receipts.

If you decide not to take the PTE Academic test after making your booking online, you have up to 14 full calendar days before your test date to claim a full refund. The cancellation and reschedule policy does not include your test date. You can reschedule or cancel the test from your profile online or call our customer service team.

Reschedule Policy

  • Should you choose to reschedule the test 14 calendar days or more (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will be eligible for a free reschedule.
  • Should you choose to reschedule the test between 13 and 8 calendar days (day of the test is not included) before the test date, they will be charged 50% of the test fee originally paid.
  • Should you choose to reschedule 7 calendar days or less (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will be subject to an additional new test fee (which is the entire test fee).

Cancellation Policy

  • Should you choose to cancel the test 14 calendar days or more (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will be eligible to receive a full refund.
  • Should you choose to cancel the test between 13 and 8 calendar days (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date (day of the test is not included), they will be eligible for a 50% refund of the test fee paid.
  • Should you choose to cancel the test 7 calendar days or less (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will not be eligible for any refund.

Medical or Family emergency reschedule:

If you are physically unable to attend the test center on the day of your test because of illness or family emergency, Pearson may agree to a one-off reschedule. We may agree to reschedule the test free-of-charge. No test may be rescheduled more than once for medical or family emergency reasons.

You will need to fill in the “Request Emergency reschedule” form on your test day with the required information within 14 full calendar days of the scheduled date of the test attaching your evidence. Acceptance of evidence is at our discretion. There is no automatic right to rebook or obtain a refund if you cannot sit a test for medical or family reasons. You will be contacted if any additional information is required.

Pearson may, at its sole discretion, offer you a refund for any testing fees where you have registered and paid testing fees directly to Pearson. This may apply in cases where Pearson has canceled your test due to scheduling or test center issues. Any other direct costs and expenses incurred beyond the cost of the test will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Where you have registered using a voucher, please contact the outlet from which you obtained or purchased the voucher. Pearson cannot provide any direct refunds for voucher registrations.

What can I do to improve my score?

If you did not achieve the score you need, visit this page and read are our tips for a better result next time.

The starting point for achieving a better score on PTE Academic is understanding your current English proficiency level. You can use your previous Test Taker Score Report to determine the enabling skills (grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse) and communicative skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) that require further study to improve your English language ability.

Remember that your overall score is based on your performance on all test questions, so focus on the weaker areas and plan how long you’ll need to study to increase your skills up to the desired level.

Test day experience

PTE Academic is taken at a secure test center. You will need to show your ID, check in with the Test Administrator, and sit your test in a secure computer room.

Arrive 30 minutes before

You should arrive 30 minutes before the start time of your test. At arrival you will need to complete the necessary sign-in procedures. Additional rules and instructions are also given before the start of the test.

If you are late you may be denied entry to the test center and your test fee will not be refunded.

A test center administrator will request copies of your ID, ask for a digital photograph and signature, scan your palm, assign you a locker to check-in your belongings, and ensure you are ready for your test.

Bring correct identification:

You must provide your valid, non-expired, original ID to sit PTE Academic. A passport is the only acceptable form of ID in most countries.

The name on your ID must exactly match the name used when booking the test.
If you do not have your passport due to an ongoing visa application, you will need to request it back in order to present on the day of your test.

If you do not have a passport, please review the ID Policy as you may be able to provide an alternative form of identification.

For security reasons, non-matching or expired ID will prohibit entry to the test center. Test takers that fail to provide acceptable valid ID that matches their booking will be turned away at the test center and will lose their test fee.

Test center rules

Personal items are not allowed into the testing room including bags, books, notes, mobile phones, pagers, laptops or other personal computers, wallets and watches. However, we do provide secure, locker storage outside of the testing room.

While at the test center, please abide by the test center rules and any instructions given by the Test Administrator. You are also not permitted to speak to any other candidate or leave the building during breaks; however, you are permitted to use the restrooms located within the building. Failure to comply may result in your appointment being ended early, cancelation of your results, and/or forfeiture of your test fee.

Palm vein recognition scans the veins inside your hand to create a digital template that represents your palm vein pattern. Everyone’s veins are different, just like a fingerprint, this allows us to check your identity. To use the palm vein scanner, you simply hold your hand in place above the scanner for a few seconds. The scanner uses a near-infrared light source, similar to a remote control – and you never touch the sensor. In case your palm cannot be scanned due to an injury, please contact our Customer Service Team at least 3 working days before your test.

Most PTE Academic test centers have around 10 seats. You will be sitting in a partitioned booth with other test takers around you so you may be able to hear your neighbors speak as they take their test, but you will be responding to slightly different questions.

There will be other test takers in the same room, and they will be speaking at the same time as you. For this reason, we recommend that you keep your headset on during the entire test. Candidates are advised to speak at a conversational level when completing the speaking section. Do not shout or raise your voice.

After answering a question, you will not be able to go back to previous questions to change your answers.

What happens if there is a problem with my computer during the test?

What happens if I have to leave for an emergency?

Raise your hand and explain your situation to the test administrator. They will advise further and if you choose to abandon the test, you will forfeit the test fee.

Can I leave early if I finish the test?

Yes. Raise your hand and ask the test administrator for permission to leave.

How do I know how much time I have left?

Each section of the test is individually timed. You will see a timer in the top right corner of the screen counting down the remaining time.

Can I take notes during the test?

Yes. We will give you an erasable note board booklet (about 5 sheets of A4 paper) and 2 pens. If you run out of space or need an additional pen, you can ask for another booklet or a new pen.

You are not allowed to make notes until the test has started. Please be aware that you are only allowed to request a replacement note board booklet once it is completely filled or used.

Can I correct my answers during the test?

You can correct multiple-choice responses (click again to deselect your answer) and typed responses (use the cut, copy and paste options).

However, you must correct mistakes before moving on to the next item. You cannot re-record any spoken responses. The microphone will switch off automatically if you are silent for more than 3 seconds during an answer.

Accessing and sending your score

PTE Academic scores are accessed via your online account. You will receive an email notifying you once your scores are available. After you receive this, you will need to Sign in to your My PTE account to view your report.

Viewing your score report

When your score report becomes available, please follow this process. You will see a notification on your My PTE homepage if your score report is not yet ready.

Remember, your score report is valid for 2 years from the date you took your test. Scores should be assigned within two years of taking your test. The DHA (Department of Home Affairs in Australia) will accept scores assigned up to three years after your test date.

To view your score, please sign into your My PTE account by going to pearsonpte.com and clicking on Sign in.

  • Once you are signed in, you will see a “View Score” button on your homepage. Click on this button to view your score.
  • If there is no “View Score” button visible on the homepage, go to “My Activity”, find the relevant test and select the “View Score” button alongside it.
  • If you wish, you may download your report in PDF format to save or print.

You must send your PTE Academic score through our secure portal. Institutions do not accept paper or PDF versions of PTE Academic score reports. You can send your scores to an unlimited number of institutions free of charge.

When you booked your test, you were given an option to send your scores to DHA or INZ. If you ticked either of the boxes asking for scores to be allocated to the DHA (Australia) or INZ (New Zealand), your scores will be automatically sent to them. If you chose to assign your scores when booking and did not get the desired score in your test, do not worry as DHA or INZ will not review your scores unless you have already submitted your application.

When logging your application simply include the Test Registration ID of the result you wish them to review.

Sending your score report to institutions:

  • Sign in to your My PTE account.
  • Go to “My Activity
  • Click “Send Scores” next to the relevant test.
  • Type the name of your chosen institution in the field marked ‘Institution / Organization / Department / School’ and click ‘Search’. You can send up to seven at once.
  • Tick the box next to the institution’s name when it appears in the list.
  • Review your details then scroll down the page and click ‘Next’ and then ‘Next’ again to confirm. It takes up to 48 hours before the institution can view your score.
  • You will receive a confirmation email when your scores have been sent.

When will institutions be able to see my score?

After you have assigned a score to an institution through your account, it takes up to 48 hours before the institution can view your score. Institutions will not see your scores unless you allow them to by sending your scores to them via your My PTE account. This means that institutions will not be able to see if your scores are better or worse than previous attempts. You can send them to an unlimited number of institutions, but you may only select seven recipients at any one time (per score order).

Can I send my previous scores to institutions?

Yes. Just choose the score you want to send once you have signed in to your My PTE account. Scores remain available for two years. If you have not assigned your scores within two years, you will not be able to assign them as they expire after two years from the test date.

Why have you sent me a message saying my chosen institution does not recognize the test?

The institution you selected does not yet recognize PTE Academic formally. You will not be able to send your score to this institution until it accepts PTE Academic.

Sending your score report to the UK Home Office

If you have taken the UKVI test, your score report will contain a SELT Unique Reference Number (URN). This should be entered on your visa application form so that the UK Government can securely access your results.

PTE Academic is scored against the Global Scale of English, a thermometer-style scale that gives you an accurate overview of your skills. The Global Scale of English aligns with a variety of popular tests and scales around the world. Find out more about the Global Scale of English.

Your score report has several sections:

  • Your personal details and photo
  • Your Test Registration ID and Score Report Code
  • Your overall score
  • A detailed breakdown of your performance

The PTE Academic Score Report includes your overall score, communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores.

The overall score reflects your overall English language ability. The score is based on performance on all items in the test. The range for the overall score is 10-90 points.

Scores for communicative skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) are based on all test items that assess these skills, either as a single skill, or together with other skills. The range for each communicative skill score is 10-90 points.

Scores for enabling skills (grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse) are based on all test items assessing one or more of these skills. The range for each enabling skill score is 10-90 points.

The display of the scores in a graph allows you to quickly see your strengths and weaknesses, and how each skill relates to your overall performance.

How is the test scored?

All responses in PTE Academic are machine scored using PTE Academic’s automated scoring system. Scores for some question types are based on correctness alone, while others are based on correctness, formal aspects and the quality of the response. Formal aspects refer to the form of the response: for example, whether it is over or under the word limit for a particular item type. The quality of the response is represented in the enabling skills. For example, in the item type, Retell lecture, the response is scored on skills such as oral fluency and pronunciation. There are two types of scoring: correct or incorrect, and partial scoring.

Correct or incorrect: If responses are correct, a score of 1 score point will be given, but if they are incorrect, no score points are awarded.

Partial credit: Other item types are scored as correct, partially correct or incorrect. If responses to these items are correct, the maximum score points available for each item type will be received, but if they are partly correct, some score points will be given, but less than the maximum available for the item type. If responses are incorrect, no score points will be received.

How does PTE Academic mark different accents?

Your accent will not stand in the way of success! Everyone has an accent. You might even be a proficient or native English speaker, but with an accent other people find hard to understand.

So how does your accent affect your score when you take PTE Academic? Because PTE Academic is marked by a computer, it can cut out potential obstacles, such as a human examiner being unfamiliar with your particular accent.

When the automated scoring program was being designed, the computer was trained using 130 different language backgrounds, so it recognizes accents from around the globe. As a result, PTE Academic’s automated scoring technology recognizes and marks everyone’s speech equally and with equal accuracy, regardless of where they are from. What the PTE Academic scoring engine looks for is intelligibility and clarity of response (not which accent you are speaking in) – did you answer in a clear and understandable way that any international speaker of English would understand? How do you know PTE Academic’s computer marking works?

The test has been designed by humans, all leading experts in their field. Our human experts design and write the questions, quality assure them and then score them. At this point, computers are trained to use the patterns of highly trained language experts to attribute scores to questions. When the computer marks correlate highly with human scores, we then allow the computer to mark test scripts from across the world.

As a result of our processes and technology, the computer behaves like an expert human examiner – but without any possible bias, lack of concentration or variation between individual examiners. The scoring criteria are exactly the same as human scoring – test takers are marked on their delivery, clarity, relevance, accuracy of grammar and appropriateness of vocabulary.

I got a good enabling skill score the first time I took the test and now I have a very low score. What went wrong?

Mastering the English language and achieving a high score on PTE Academic is a challenging task for many test takers. We appreciate test takers feel frustrated when they don’t achieve the score they need or hoped to achieve. We would like to reassure you and your students/clients that we make every effort to ensure that the scores we give are accurate to the degree we describe in the Score Guide. PTE Academic scoring is being constantly monitored and refined. We are confident that the scoring system is providing accurate scores.

Each time you take the test you may get a different score. The differences in the overall score should be quite small, but for skill scores and enabling skill scores, these might be larger. Enabling skill scores are used only for guidance so don’t worry if you see a bigger difference there. It just reflects how you answered some of the questions at that particular sitting.

How is it possible to get a score of 10?

PTE Academic reports scores between 10 and 90. Some scores are below 10 and some are above 90 but we don’t report these. Some enabling skills scores are based on only a few questions so if you did badly on those questions you might get 10 on that enabling skill. You can still get a high score by answering the other questions correctly.

What are the enabling skill scores?

Enabling skills are part of the skills that make up language proficiency. So, pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. The scores are given to provide additional insight to the test taker on their areas of strength or weakness. Low enabling scores do not impact your overall score; however, they are a useful indicator if there are any areas a test taker should work on before they take the test again.

Why did I get a good Speaking score but a Pronunciation or Fluency score of 10?

The scores for Speaking and Fluency are calculated separately. The speaking score comes from all speaking items and include pronunciation, fluency and the content of the answers. Fluency is measured only on some items and is only a small part of the speaking score. That’s why sometimes people score well on Speaking but have a lower score on fluency.

Does PTE Academic discriminate against some accents?

No. The marking engine is trained to recognize speech from over 90 different language groups. One of the benefits of the test being computer scored is that has no bias against any particular accent. All test takers are treated the same. So, the score you get represents a true measure of your ability on the day of the test.

Am I able to access my test content after taking the test?

As PTE Academic is used as an approved form of evidence of English language ability for visa applications for entry into Australia, we must maintain the strictest level of security around the exposure and use of our test content. Outside of any security-monitored test session, we are not in a position to share any live, in-use PTE Academic test content or any responses to questions which would either directly reveal or infer suitable responses to questions posed. In acceding to requests for disclosure of questions and responses, we risk compromising the integrity of our test by potentially facilitating fraudulent use of test content or providing an unfair advantage in respect of candidate preparation.

Retake or request a rescore

Retake:

If you are disappointed with the score you have achieved, you can take the test again. You may retake PTE Academic as many times as you want, although you must wait until you have received your scores from one test before booking another. Institutions will not see your scores unless you allow them to by sending your scores to them via the website. This means that institutions will not be able to see if your scores are better or worse than previous attempts. You can send them to an unlimited number of institutions, but you may only select seven recipients at any one time (per score order).

Test scores are valid for up to two years from the date of the test. After that, you will no longer be able to view those scores on the website.

Retake policy:

  • You can book your next test as soon as the results from your last test are available.
  • You can book a test date 5 days after your previous attempt.
  • You can only book one test at a time.
  • New appointment can be booked up to 6 months in advance.
  • You can take the test as many times as you wish.

Rescore:

If you are unhappy with your PTE Academic score, you may request a rescore. Before doing this, you should take the following into consideration:

  • PTE Academic is a computer scored test; therefore, it is unlikely that your overall scores will change.
  • Only spoken responses and open-ended written responses are rescored.
  • In the unlikely event that your score changes, it may go up or down. In the unlikely event that either your overall, communicative, or enabling skills scores change, the rescore fee will be fully refunded.
  • If your score changes, it will replace your previous score and your original score report will be reissued to reflect the new score.
  • You can only request a rescore once per test registration.
  • You may only request a rescore of your most recent PTE Academic test.
  • You cannot request a rescore if you have already either scheduled another test or sent your score to an institution.

To request a rescore, you must call the Customer Service Team within 14 calendar days of your score report being made available to you. The fee for rescores is available from the Customer Service team.

Please note that we can only process Re-score via phone.

What is PTE Home?

The fast and fair English test

 

PTE Home is a computer-based English test which is accepted by the UK Home Office as proof of language proficiency for several family and work visas and for settlement and citizenship. It is a pass-fail test which assesses your speaking and listening skills. There are three different levels depending on the requirements of your visa: A1, A2 and B1, and the test duration is between 22 and 29 minutes. To complete a PTE Home test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test center. You will use a computer and a headset to listen to, read and respond to questions. Benefits of PTE Home include the following:

  • Results are typically available within 5 days.
  • Computer based marking ensures all test takers are scored impartially and accurately.
  • The test is accepted by the UK Government for a variety of visa categories. These include spouse/partner visa, parent of a dependent, representative of an overseas business, and tier 2 Sportsperson visa. PTE Home is also accepted for UK settlement and citizenship. You can find out more about the eligibility requirements for each of these visas on the UK Government website.

The test format

Each PTE Home test lasts under 30 minutes. During the test session, you will encounter a range of different question types. More information about each level can be found below, with a video showing the question types.

Do I need to know about a specific subject to take the test?

No. PTE Home is a test of your English ability in everyday settings. The test covers a range of subjects within the item contents, but you are not being tested on these subjects.

Do I need computer skills to take the test?

You do not need any special computer skills to take PTE Home. However, it may be beneficial to familiarize yourself with the technical set up of the test. As PTE Home is a speaking and listening test, you will use a headset and a mouse to respond to questions.

I am under 18 years old. Can I take the test?

PTE Home is only available to test takers who are over 18 years old.

Do I have to take PTE Home in my home country?

You can take it at any of our test centers around the world that offer PTE Home. Find your nearest test center. Make sure you check what type of ID you have to use. Please check the ID Policy regarding the acceptable form of ID. If you are testing outside your home country, you will probably be asked to show your passport at the test centre.

Why should test takers choose PTE Home?

PTE Home is accepted by the UK Government for a variety of different visa categories. In addition to its unbiased approach to testing, the test has many unique advantages.

 

Artificial intelligence

Did you know that artificial intelligence means that all test taker’s results are graded by an algorithm, not humans? The use of scoring technology means that it’s not simply a single human assessing your English language skills, but a very clever algorithm that mimics how expert human markers would score, based on many, many responses.

When you take the PTE Home test, what you say is graded by AI against thousands of previous responses. What this means is that you’re graded only on what you say, not your accent or anything else.

Share your result with the UK Home Office automatically

Your score report will contain a Unique Reference Number (URN) which you should put on your visa application. The UK Government can use this number to securely access your result.

What kind of identification document (ID) do I need to bring?

Please check the ID Policy to see what form of ID is accepted for your test. A passport is the only acceptable form of ID in most countries.

 

Verify that your passport/form of ID will be valid on the date of your test, including the spelling of your name. If your passport has expired, or if your name does not match our records, you will be turned away from the test center. Refunds are not given in the event that you are turned away from the test center due to an invalid ID. A passport is the most widely accepted form of ID.

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Test Taker Handbook as it includes test policies and procedures.

If you have already booked a PTE test in the past, you will not be able to change your personal details online. In order to change your details, please submit the “Update my personal information” form. You will be contacted if any additional information is required. We will not be able to assist you over the phone.
If you have not booked a PTE test in the past or it is your first time booking your PTE test, you will be able to change your personal details up to 24 hours before your test except your date of birth (DOB) by logging into your MyPTE account. Sign into your My PTE account by going to pearsonpte.com and clicking on Sign in. You can then click on your profile and update the account or personal information there. In order to change your date of birth, please submit the “Update my personal information” form. You will be contacted if any additional information is required. We will not be able to assist you over the phone.

Requesting special accommodations

Please read the following information carefully as it contains instructions on how to make requests for special accommodations when taking the PTE Home test.

 

Approval process

Any accommodation request (including special requirements or access arrangements) must be submitted using our dedicated form and approved prior to booking a test.

Please sign in or create a new PTE account by going to pearsonpte.com and clicking on Sign in. In the Personal Information section, please check the box when asked if you any have special requirements. You will then be taken to a link to complete an Accommodations Request form. Please refer to the test taker handbook for further details.

If you selected the Accommodation box by mistake, and you are unable to book your test via your account then please read carefully. All you have to do is to untick the special need box under Personal Information section. In case you are unable to change the settings and untick the box, please submit this form and leave a clear note in the text field that you do not require special accommodation and you were not able to change your settings. We can only remove the block off in if you cannot do it via your account.

Your request will be assessed, and you will be notified of the outcome within 72 hours of your request being received. We aim to schedule a test based on your preference, but it may be that we cannot offer your requested date. We may only be able to offer a test date with your accommodation request within 2-6 weeks of your preferred date, depending on what is being requested, center availability, and other factors.

While we make every effort to allow you to sit the PTE Home at your chosen center, you may be required to attend another test center in a different location. Not all test centers are able to offer the same access arrangements, so requests in advance help us direct you to the closest available, suitable center.

Please note: if you have already scheduled your test, we may not be able to provide the requested accommodation for you on your scheduled test date or venue. In such cases, you may need to cancel or reschedule your test and pay the rescheduling fee.

Be sure that the spelling of your name on the Accommodation Request form matches the name on the identification you will present on the day of your test. If this information does not match, you will not be admitted to the test centre, and you will forfeit your test fee. Please ensure that you leave sufficient time before the date on which you would like to take the test and do not book your test until your accommodation request is confirmed.

Comfort aids

You can find this list within our test taker handbook under Special needs section which shows the comfort aids that do not require pre-approval. They will be allowed in the testing room upon visual inspection by the Test Centre staff. Visual inspection will be done by examining the item without directly touching it (or the candidate) and without asking the candidate to remove the item, unless otherwise stated below.

Booking your test

Check the ID policy before you register or book your test

 

 

The ID Policy shows what forms of ID are accepted in your region. A passport is the only acceptable form of ID in most countries. If you do not produce the required ID on test day you will not be allowed into the test room and will lose your test fee.

If you are under the age of 18
PTE Home is only available to test takers who are over 18 years old.

Creating an account

To book PTE Home, you must create a My PTE account. You will receive an email within 48 hours with your login details. Never create a duplicate account as you will not be able to make a booking if a duplicate account is identified.

Use a valid and secure email address as this email address is where you will receive any correspondence relating to your test booking.

Name instructions

You must spell your legal name exactly as it appears on the identification you will present at the test centre. If there is not an exact match, you will not be able to take your test and you will not be reimbursed for any fees paid.

  • If you only have one name, enter it in the Last Name/Surname/Family name field and enter a full stop (.) in the “First Name” field.
  • Use roman characters throughout.
  • First/Given Names (including Middle names): always spell your first and middle names as they appear on your government issued ID.
  • Last name / Surname / Family Name: always spell as it appears on your government issued ID.

Booking your test

Once you have created your My PTE account, you can Sign in and schedule your test.

You can register for the test online or by phone through our call centres. Contact the customer service team in your region.

After booking, if you do not receive a confirmation email within 2 working days, please check your junk or spam email folders.

Common registration questions

  • My given and family names are the same. What should I enter into the registration form? Your name should exactly match your ID. If you only have one name (that is both your given name and family name) enter it in the “Last Name/Surname/Family Name” name field. Enter a period/full stop in the “First Name/Given Name” field.
  • My name is too long to fit the space on the form. What should I enter into the registration form?Enter as much of your name as you can. Then fill out the “Update your personal information” form at least 3 working days before your test day so we know there will be a difference between the name you register with and the name on your ID. If your name on your test registration does not match your ID, you will not be allowed to take your test.
  • What happens if my ID shows a different name to the one I registered with? Fill out the “Update your personal information” form at least 3 working days before your test day so we know there will be a difference between the name you register with and the name on your ID. If your name on your test registration does not match your ID, you will not be allowed to take your test.

Methods of payment

The full fee must be paid when you book your test. If payment is not made in the currency specified for the country where you intend to take your test, your registration or request for service will not be processed and your payment will be rejected and / or returned to you.

Accepted forms of payment are: credit card (Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, or JCB®) or debit card (Visa® or MasterCard® only). We do not accept PayPal. You can use a card that is registered in a different name (e.g. a parent’s credit card.). Please note, we can only process refunds to the card which was used for payment.

If your credit card is declined, your appointment will not be processed. You will be responsible for scheduling your test appointment again using a valid form of payment.

If you have received a voucher you may apply it to the test fee. However, you may not use it to pay a rescheduling fee or receive a refund.

A late booking fee is incurred if a booking is made 48 hours before a test.

Booking confirmation

After booking, if you do not receive a confirmation email within 2 working days, please check your junk or spam email folders. We do not resend booking, rescheduling and cancellation email notifications anymore as it is visible under the test taker’s account. We can only resend payment confirmation emails by visiting your account under Activity and click on View Receipts. Review your confirmation email to ensure your name is listed exactly how it is on the identification you intend to show on the day of your test.

Update your personal information (name, date of birth, citizenship, address)

Write to us

Merge multiple accounts

It is not permitted to create multiple accounts to take the PTE Home test. If multiple accounts are identified, you will not be able to continue with your booking until these accounts have been merged.

 

 

If multiple accounts are identified by the system, you will be notified by a message on your My PTE homepage. A case will be raised on your behalf by the system, which will be reviewed by our Customer Support agents.

If the Customer Support team recognise a genuine multiple account, they will merge the accounts on your behalf, and you will be able to proceed with your booking as normal.

I haven’t received my PTE Home result

Test results are typically available within 5 days. Occasionally, results may be returned in less than 5 days. Seldomly, results may be delayed. As soon as your result is available, you will receive an email.

 

 

I have not yet received my result. What should I do?

  • 5 days or fewer since your test: We kindly ask that you wait patiently. You will receive an email from PTE when your result is ready to be released. However, you can log into your account at any time.
  • Over 5 days since your test: We recommend checking your junk or spam email folders as the email may be there. You will be able to log into your account at any time. If you still have not received your score after 5 days from your test, we kindly ask that you wait patiently. You will receive an email from PTE when your score is ready to be released.

Why could my result take longer than 5 days?

There are a number of reasons why a result may take over 5 days. These can include:

  • Certainty: Our system sometimes flags results for additional review which can take more time. Because PTE Home is used to make important decisions, it is important that we get your result right every time and this can take extra time.
  • Security: Before releasing a result, we need to ensure the person that took the test is who they say. Our biometric security systems may have identified a security issue and that triggered an investigation.

Are there tips for getting a faster result?

Your PTE Home result will be returned as soon as it has been scored. There are a few things you can do to reduce the chance of delay:

  • Follow all instructions carefully when creating your account and booking your test.
  • Create your account using a personal email that you check regularly so we can communicate with you directly.

My score report is blank:

If you are notified that your score report was available, but you cannot see it, or it says, “Technical problems are preventing us from displaying candidate photographs at this time”. Please try running your report again later. Your result will soon be available in the next 24 hours. If it is still not available after 24 hours, please submit this form.

Due to the nature of your request, we highly recommend that you use our Write to Us contact form below. As this specific enquiry requires a designated team, our phone and live chat options will only be able to create a case on your behalf which may cause further delay.

I cannot log in to my account

If you are having problems accessing your My PTE account, please go to pearsonpte.com and click on Sign in. Click on the link at the bottom of the screen that says “Forgotten your username or password?” and then select either “Forgotten password?” or “Forgotten username?

 

 

If you click on “Forgot your password?” then you will have to enter your username/email and we will send you a reset link. If you have forgotten your password, you will be able to reset your password straight away.
If you click on “Forgot your username?” then you will have to contact our Customer Support via our Contact Us page to have your identity verified, before your username will be released to you.

Rescheduling or cancelling a test

If your plans or availability change, you may reschedule or cancel your appointment at any time. We highly recommend that you do this as soon as possible to reduce the cancellation fee.

The easiest way to cancel or reschedule your test is through your My PTE account.

Online: Login to your account

  • Sign into your account with your username and password.
  • Once you have successfully logged in click on ‘Reschedule’ or ‘Cancel’ on the appointment information on your homepage
  • You will receive an email confirming the change to your test booking.
  • We do not resend booking, rescheduling and cancellation email notifications anymore as it is visible under the test taker’s account. We can only resend payment confirmation emails by visiting your account under Activity and click on View Receipts. We can also resend these confirmation emails via Admin Console under Activity on View Receipts.

If you decide not to take the PTE Home test after making your booking online, you have up to 14 full calendar days before your test date to claim a full refund. The cancellation and reschedule policy does not include your test date. You can reschedule the test from your profile online or call our customer service team.

Reschedule Policy:

  • Should you choose to reschedule the test 14 calendar days or more (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will be eligible for a free reschedule.
  • Should you choose to reschedule the test between 13 and 8 calendar days (day of the test is not included) before the test date, they will be charged 50% of the test fee originally paid.
  • Should you choose to reschedule 7 calendar days or less (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will be subject to an additional new test fee (which is the entire test fee).

Cancellation Policy:

  • Should you choose to cancel the test 14 calendar days or more (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will be eligible to receive a full refund.
  • Should you choose to cancel the test between 13 and 8 calendar days (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date (day of the test is not included), they will be eligible for a 50% refund of the test fee paid.
  • Should you choose to cancel the test 7 calendar days or less (day of the test is not included) before the scheduled test date, they will not be eligible for any refund.

Medical or Family emergency reschedule

If you are physically unable to attend the test center on the day of your test because of illness or family emergency, Pearson may agree to a one-off reschedule. We may agree to reschedule the test free-of-charge. No test may be rescheduled more than once for medical or family emergency reasons.

You will need to fill in the “Request Emergency reschedule” form on your test day with the required information within 14 full calendar days of the scheduled date of the test attaching your evidence. Acceptance of evidence is at our discretion. There is no automatic right to rebook or obtain a refund if you cannot sit a test for medical or family reasons. You will be contacted if any additional information is required.

Refunds

Pearson may, at its sole discretion, offer you a refund for any testing fees where you have registered and paid any testing fees directly to Pearson. This may apply in cases where Pearson has canceled your test due to scheduling or test center issues. Any other direct costs and expenses incurred beyond the cost of the test will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Where you have registered using a voucher, please contact the outlet from which you obtained or purchased the voucher. Pearson cannot provide any direct refunds for voucher registrations.

If you paid by credit/debit card, any refund will be credited back to the original credit/debit card or bank account.

Preparing for your test

We encourage you to prepare for PTE Home before taking the test.

Test day experience

PTE Home is taken at a secure test center, where you will need to show your ID, check in with the Test Administrator, and sit your test in a secure computer room.

 

 

 

Arrive 30 minutes before

We urge you to arrive 30 minutes before the start time of your test. At arrival you will need to complete the necessary sign-in procedures. Additional rules and instructions are also given before the start of the test.

If you are late you may be denied entry to the test center and your test fee will not be refunded.

A test center administrator will request copies of your ID, ask for a digital photograph and signature, scan your palm, assign you a locker to check-in your belongings, and ensure you are ready for your test.

Bring correct Identification:

You must provide your valid, non-expired, original ID to sit for PTE Home. Please note, a passport is the only acceptable form of ID in most countries.

The name on your ID must exactly match the name used when booking the test.

If you do not have your passport due to an ongoing visa application, you will need to request it back in order to present on the day of your test.

If you do not have a passport, please review the ID Policy as you may be able to provide an alternative form of identification.

For security reasons, non-matching or expired ID will prohibit entry to the test center. Test takers that fail to provide acceptable ID, or ID that matches their booking, will be turned away at the test center and will forfeit their test fee.

Test center rules

Personal items are not allowed into the testing room including bags, books, notes, mobile phones, pagers, laptops or other personal computers, wallets and watches. However, we do provide secure, locker storage outside of the testing room.

While at the test center, please abide by the test center rules and any instructions given by the Test Administrator. You are also not permitted to speak to any other candidate or leave the building during breaks; however, you are permitted to use the restrooms located within the building. Failure to comply may result in your appointment being ended early, cancelation of your results, and/or forfeiture of your test fee.

Palm vein recognition scans the veins inside your hand to create a digital template that represents your palm vein pattern. Everyone’s veins are different, just like a fingerprint, this allows us to check your identity. To use the palm vein scanner, you simply hold your hand in place above the scanner for a few seconds. The scanner uses a near-infrared light source, similar to a remote control – and you never touch the sensor. In case your palm cannot be scanned due to an injury, please contact our Customer Service Team at least 3 working days before your test.

Most PTE Home test centers have around 10 seats. You will be sitting in a partitioned booth with other test takers around you so you may be able to hear your neighbors speak as they take their test, but you will be responding to slightly different questions.

There will be other test takers in the same room, and they will be speaking at the same time as you. For this reason, we recommend that you keep your headset on during the entire test. Candidates are advised to speak at a conversational level when completing the speaking section. Do not shout or raise your voice.

After answering a question, you will not be able to go back to previous questions to change your answers.

What happens if there is a problem with my computer during the test?

Raise your hand and tell the test administrator immediately. They will do whatever they can to help and will ensure the problem is recorded and reported.

Make sure you tell the test administrator about any problems you feel affect your ability to complete the test. Your test administrator will log a case in our system after reviewing the situation. Without their record of the problem, it is very hard for us to trace these issues later on. They must provide you a case number.

What happens if I want to report an issue during the test?

Raise your hand and tell the test administrator immediately. They will do whatever they can to help and will ensure the problem is recorded and reported.

Make sure you tell the test administrator about any problems you feel affect your ability to complete the test. Your test administrator will log a case in our system after reviewing the situation. Without their record of the problem, it is very hard for us to trace these issues later on.

What should I do if I see a problem with a question?

Raise your hand and tell the test administrator immediately. They will ask you to complete a form. This will then be sent to us so we can investigate. They must provide you a case number at the test center.

What happens if I have to leave for an emergency?

Raise your hand and explain your situation to the test administrator. They will advise further and if you choose to abandon the test, you will forfeit the test fee.

Can I leave early if I finish the test?

Yes. Raise your hand and ask the test administrator for permission to leave.

How do I know how much time I have left?

Each section of the test is individually timed. You will see a timer in the top right corner of the screen counting down the remaining time.

Can I take notes during the test?

Yes. We will give you an erasable note board booklet (about 5 sheets of A4 paper) and 2 pens. If you run out of space or need an additional pen, you can ask for another booklet or a new pen.

You are not allowed to make notes until the test has started. Please be aware that you are only allowed to request a replacement note board booklet once it is completely filled or used.

Can I correct my answers during the test?

You cannot re-record your answers or go back to a previous question once you have moved to the next question.

Accessing and sending your score

PTE Academic scores are accessed via your online account. You will receive an email notifying you once your scores are available. After you receive this, you will need to Sign in to your My PTE account that you created to book your test.

 

 

 

Viewing your score report

When your score report becomes available, please follow this process. You will see a notification on your My PTE homepage if your score report is not yet ready.

Remember, your score report is valid for 2 years from the date you took your test. Scores should be assigned within two years of taking your test. After that, you will no longer be able to view those results on the website.

To view your score, please sign into your My PTE account by going to pearsonpte.com and clicking on Sign in.

  • Once you are signed in, you will see a “View Score” button on your homepage. Click on this button to view your score.
  • If there is no “View Score” button visible on the homepage, go to “My Activity”, find the relevant test and select the “View Score” button alongside it.
  • If you wish, you may download your report in PDF format to save or print.

 

Sending your score report to the UK Home Office

If you have taken the UKVI test, your score report will contain a SELT Unique Reference Number (URN). This should be entered on your visa application form so that the UK Government can securely access your results.

All items in PTE Home are machine scored using PTE Home’s automated scoring system. Scores for some item types are based on correctness alone, while others are based on correctness, formal aspects and the quality of the response.

How does PTE Home mark different accents?

Your accent will not stand in the way of success! Everyone has an accent. You might even be a proficient or native English speaker, but with an accent other people find hard to understand.

So how does your accent affect your score when you take PTE Home? Because PTE Home is marked by a computer, it can cut out potential obstacles, such as a human examiner being unfamiliar with your particular accent.

When the automated scoring program was being designed, the computer was trained using 130 different language backgrounds, so it recognizes accents from around the globe. As a result, PTE Home’s automated scoring technology recognizes and marks everyone’s speech equally and with equal accuracy, regardless of where they are from. What the PTE Home scoring engine looks for is intelligibility and clarity of response (not which accent you are speaking in) – did you answer in a clear and understandable way that any international speaker of English would understand? How do you know PTE Home’s computer scoring works?

The test has been designed by humans, all leading experts in their field. Our human experts design and write the questions, quality assure them and then score them. At this point, computers are trained to use the patterns of highly trained language experts to attribute scores to questions. When the computer marks correlate highly with human scores, we then allow the computer to mark test scripts from across the world.

As a result of our processes and technology, the computer behaves like an expert human examiner – but without any possible bias, lack of concentration or variation between individual examiners. The scoring criteria are exactly the same as human scoring – test takers are marked on their delivery, clarity, relevance, accuracy of grammar and appropriateness of vocabulary.

Does PTE Home discriminate against some accents?

No. The marking engine is trained to recognize speech from over 90 different language groups. One of the benefits of the test being computer scored is that it has no bias against any particular accent. All test takers are treated the same. So, the score you get represents a true measure of your ability on the day of the test.

Am I able to access my test content after taking the test?

As PTE Home is used as an approved form of evidence of English language ability for visa applications, we must maintain the strictest level of security around the exposure and use of our test content. Outside of any security-monitored test session, we are not in a position to share any live, in-use PTE Home test content or any responses to questions which would either directly reveal or infer suitable responses to questions posed. In acceding to requests for disclosure of questions and responses, we risk compromising the integrity of our test by potentially facilitating fraudulent use of test content or providing an unfair advantage in respect of candidate preparation.

Retake or request a rescore

If you are disappointed with the result you have achieved, you can take the test again. You may retake PTE Home as many times as you want, although you must wait until you have received your result from one test before booking another. The UK Government will only see the result once you provide them with a UKVI number.

Test results are valid for up to 2 years from the date of the test. After that, you will no longer be able to view your result on the website.

Retake policy:

  • You can book your next test as soon as the result from your last test are available.
  • You can book a test date 5 days after your previous attempt.
  • You can only book one test at a time.
  • Your new appointment can be booked up to 6 months in advance.
  • You can take the test as many times as you wish.

Rescore:

If you are unhappy with your PTE Home result, you may request a rescore. Before doing this, you should take the following into consideration:

  • PTE Home is a computer scored test; therefore, it is unlikely that your overall scores will change.
  • If your result changes, it will replace your previous result and your original score report will be reissued to reflect the new result.
  • You can only request a rescore once per test registration.
  • You cannot request a rescore if you have already scheduled another test.
  • You may only request a rescore of your most recent test.

To request a rescore, you must contact the Customer Service Team within 14 calendar days of your score report being made available to you. The fee for rescores is available from the Customer Service team.

About Scored Practice Tests and Sample Questions

How many different Scored Practice Tests are currently available to purchase?

Four. Scored Practice Test version A, B, C and D (formerly 1-4) can be bought separately or as part of a package and can only be used once. If you want to purchase any of the versions again, you will receive the same set of questions. The Essentials package contains Scored Test A and Sample Questions. The Readiness package contains Scored Tests A and B plus Sample Questions. Finally, the Practice and Learn packages contains scored tests A-D and sample questions.

I have just completed my purchase of online practice materials. What will I receive and when will it arrive?

You will receive an email confirmation with a Product Access Code within two hours of your purchase (usually within minutes). To access your materials, follow the link provided in the email.

Once you have registered/signed in to a myPTE account, you will asked to select your product and enter a Product Access Code.

How many times can I access the scored practice test?

The Scored Practice Tests are single use only and you will not be able to preview the questions. Please allow for up to 3 hours to sit a practice test in an environment where you won’t be distracted by your surroundings. If you wish to retake the test, you will need to make additional purchases.

If I complete a practice test and want to repurchase the same kit, will I get a new set of questions?

No, there are only 4 versions of the scores practice test. If you chose to repurchase, you will get the same 4 scored practice tests. You can only complete the scored practice tests once.

What about the sample questions?

There is currently one version of sample questions. This can be purchased as a standalone product or as part of any of the packages.

Can I take the sample questions more than once?

Yes. You can access the Sample Questions and re-practice the questions at any point during your validity period. Please note that Sample Questions is one set of 70 questions testing all skills. This set of 70 questions can be taken multiple times.

Is there a deadline to complete the practice tests? When does my account expire?

Your practice test account will be valid for 1 year. The scored tests are single use and once accessed, cannot be used multiple times during the 1-year period. Therefore, you will need to purchase another scored test to gain more practice, bearing in mind you will be provided with the same practice questions. If your account has expired and you want to access your practice scores, please choose “expiry date extension” category and submit your request via our Online Contact Form.

I would like more practice materials. Are there other materials available?

Yes, Pearson has published official printed practice materials for learners. The Official Guide to PTE Academic and Practice Test Plus can be purchased from online stockists and retailers.

Pearson have an Official Practice App for PTE Academic available for Apple and Android devices which includes more practice and key information to help prepare you for the test.

How can I find out if I have the right device and operating system to use the online practice materials?

Why do I have two sign in options to access my practice tests?

As part of a program of improvements we are making to our customer journey during May, we are making a change to the way in which you access your Practice Test materials. This is designed to provide all test takers with a better overall experience, by ensuring you only need to create and remember one username and password when purchasing PTE Academic or any Scored Practice Tests as well as accessing your scores.

  • If you bought a Scored Practice Test(s) / Preparation package from Pearson or have an unused voucher provided to you prior to May 19, 2020, you will login to your account here. You’ll use your existing login name and password and can access your Scored Practice Tests / Preparation package as normal.

My payment has been declined. What should I do?

We only accept credit and debit credit card payments online. Please check with your bank to clarify why the payment has not been authorised.

The charge on my bank account is not the same as the website advertised price for the practice materials. Have I been charged incorrectly?

All prices listed are in US dollars and not in the local currency (unless otherwise stated). Please note that all card payments will be processed in USD. This is stated on the website. The charge shown on your bank account is dependent on the conversion rate by your bank.

I’m not happy with the sample questions or online scored practice tests. How do I request a refund?

I am unable to submit my test due to a technical error e.g. the page is freezing/giving me an error message.

We recommend you try the following:

  1. Log out of your account.
  2. Clear your temporary files and cookies.
  3. Open a different browser (if you used Chrome, try and log in with Internet Explorer, and vice versa).
  4. Once logged in, check your computer compatibility.
  5. Make sure you have a stable network connection.

My audio is not recording, what should I do?

  1. Check your computer’s audio settings to make sure your microphone is working correctly.

Can you recommend a headset model to use?

We can’t recommend a brand of headsets, but we recommend over the ear headset with the microphone positioned to the side of the mouth.

This message is appearing in my results: “Your writing and overall score may be lower than you had expected as there was a problem scoring one or more of your answers to the writing questions in the test. This can happen if your answers do not conform to the instructions or you write in non-standard English.”

This message shows that you used a non-standard form of English in your Scored Test and this might have affected your scores negatively. Standard English (SE) refers to whatever form of the English language is accepted as a national norm in any English-speaking country. It encompasses grammar, vocabulary and spelling. We advise next time you take the practice tests, you try to only use one version of local English (US English or AUS English or UK English throughout the whole test) and do not use any forms of slang or idioms.

What should I do if I get an error message on the screen while taking the practice test?

Why am I receiving a Privacy pop-up question for the Flash plugin?

The first time that you attempt to record audio you will be prompted by the Flash player to enable access to the camera and microphone from the api.learnosity.com domain. Additional information regarding this authorisation request can be found in the Flash Player Help site.

I can’t click on the “allow” button in the Flash pop-up. How do I get around this?

In cases where the “Allow” button in the flash pop-up is not clickable it is necessary to manually grant Flash permission to operate in your browser. You can do this by accessing the local Flash Player Settings Manager that is installed on your computer. Please follow the steps outlined in the Flash camera & microphone settings page.

I’ve clicked “Allow” in the Flash pop-up in Chrome but I can’t record.
Chrome sometimes requires a second microphone authorisation. If this happens, you should click the “Allow” button in the top right of your browser window.

Alternatively, you may see the camera icon below.

Click on this icon to manage your media settings. Make sure you select “Ask if Pearson website wants to access your camera and microphone”. Click “Done”.
You will need to reload the page for your changes to take effect, this will start the test again.

This could be due to having previously denied access to the microphone in Chrome. To fix it, follow the below steps:

  • Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  • Select Settings.
  • Click Show advanced settings.
  • In the “Privacy” section, click Content settings.
  • In the “Media” section, click Manage exceptions to remove permissions.

I haven't received my practice test score

When will I receive my score report

Please note that this section is only about the Score Online Practice tests. If you took your test at the test centre and you are still waiting for your result, please scroll up on this page and find the delayed score report section for PTE Academic (real test).

Your score report is typically available within 4 hours after completing your test. You can view your results in the RESULTS section on your account homepage by signing into your account. Make sure you are using the correct link on the practice test page. You will need to click a different link depending on whether your practice test was purchased before or after 19 May.

If your scores are not published after 4 hours, please submit your request and we will investigate further. Please do not submit your request within 4 hours. To avoid delay, ensure to provide your name and email address registered to your practice test account. Please allow 2-4 business days for investigations.

Performance related questions

What will my score report tell me?

Your score report will tell you your overall score, your communicative skills scores (listening, reading, speaking, writing), and your enabling skills scores (e.g. grammar, spelling, vocabulary). This format gives you a realistic measure of your performance and helps you to identify the skills that you need to practice further.

What happens if I don’t agree with my score report for the online scored practice test?

Unlike the PTE Academic Test, we are unable to support re-score or appeals process for the scored practice test. Although the Online Scored Practice Test is designed to simulate a PTE Academic test format, it can’t simulate the actual conditions of the full test. Therefore, your Score Report for the Online Scored Practice Test should be seen as an indicator and may not fully reflect what your performance could be under full test conditions.

It’s important to understand that enabling skills scores, such as oral fluency and pronunciation, are only based on performance on those items that assess those skills specifically. Enabling skills are tested fewer times and scores are not awarded when responses are inappropriate for the items in either content or form. Based on this, the error measurement of the enabling skills is much wider than that of the communicative skills.

This implies that a few errors or a few correct answers on those items when assessing the enabling skills make them vary considerably; this is the reason why enabling skills scores are not the primary indicators used for most institutions. Whilst communicative skills are awarded based on a much higher number of items and, due to this, the error of measurement is lower. Your communicative speaking score is the best reflection of your overall ability.

When completing the speaking question, not using a microphone or the quality of your microphone may have impacted your score slightly and holding a microphone too close to your mouth (which in turn records your breathing) is not recommended. It’s important to remember that your microphone will automatically switch off if you do not speak for up to 3 seconds, so if you did not respond immediately, your audio may not have recorded. Speaking at a natural volume with a conversational tone is recommended and if you complete the practice test sample questions, you can listen back to your recording to evaluate your speaking. How is it possible to get a score of 10?

PTE Academic reports scores between 10 and 90. Some scores are below 10 and some are above 90 but we don’t report these. Some enabling skills scores are based on only a few questions so if you did badly on those questions you might get 10 on that enabling skill. You can still get a high score by answering the other questions correctly.

What are the enabling skill scores?

Enabling skills are part of the skills that make up language proficiency. So, pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. The scores are given to provide additional insight to the test taker on their areas of strength or weakness. Low enabling scores do not impact your overall score; however, they are a useful indicator if there are any areas a test taker should work on before they take the test again.

Why did I get a good Speaking score but a Pronunciation or Fluency score of 10?

The scores for Speaking and Fluency are calculated separately. The speaking score comes from all speaking items and include pronunciation, fluency and the content of the answers. Fluency is measured only on some items and is only a small part of the speaking score. That’s why sometimes people score well on Speaking but have a lower score on fluency.

What is included in PTE Academic English Booster?

PTE Academic English Booster is an online, self-paced platform so you have access to hundreds of practice questions. Some activities help you build your English skills for a task type and others are PTE-A tasks under timed conditions. We estimate between 100-150 hours of content on the platform, but this depends on the learner.  

We also have videos for each task type to give learners more information on the tasks and the requirements as well as videos for test day and how to prepare.  

What level of English do I need to start the course?

Access to the PTE Academic Question bank expires 6 months after the access code is activated.

Payment issues
My payment has been declined. What should I do?

Make sure you are adding the CVV and expiry date correctly.

Check with your bank and make sure you card is:

  • authorised for online store, 
  • international transactions, and
  • there is no maximum purchase limit on your card.

The charge on my bank account is not the same as the website advertised price for the practice materials. Have I been charged incorrectly?

You will not be charged any other price that you see during the checkout. Please also check that your bank does not apply any additional charges for international transactions, as we will not be responsible for these extra charges.

I’m having technical issues while purchasing (troubleshoot)

Clear your cache and cookie and open a new browser. Please make sure you remove the website link from your favourites and access the website from your browser directly. Please also make sure you entered all the requested information for a purchase.

What currencies are available for purchase?

USD as standard. More currencies may be added. Please select a ‘Buy now’ option on any product and if any alternative currency options are available, they will be displayed.

What I should do if I have not received my purchase confirmation email/access code?

  • Make sure your order was completed and you landed on the order completion screen.
  • Make sure you check your spam, junk folder and add ‘email’ to the safe list.
  • If you still have not received your confirmation email, please contact us.

I’m not happy with my product. How do I request a refund?

Please submit your request through our Contact Us form clearly stating the email address registered to your account, your order number, and the reason for your request. We will be in contact within 2-4 business days. Please note that if you have submitted the scored practice test, you will not be eligible for a refund. Please see our terms and conditions.

I have been charged twice for my order. What should I do?

If you have duplicate charges, please contact our team via the Contact Us form with your order number (displayed on your order confirmation email) and your email address. Can I use Pearson English Portal without internet connection?

No, Pearson English Portal is an online program that requires internet connection. Therefore, a stable internet connection is needed in order to access the platform.

Can I access Pearson English Portal from a mobile device?

Yes, you can access Pearson English Portal from any mobile device. 
Note: Student or Teacher interaction with Learning Objects/activities is not supported on mobile devices.

Do I have to download media files to use Pearson English Portal?

No, media files download is not required. The Pearson English Portal platform stores all data on our secure servers.

Audio and video files are not working. What should I do?

  • Please check if you are online.
  • Please check if your device and bandwidth connection meet platform system requirements.
  • Please take a screenshot if possible (this will help us to identify a problem), describe an issue and contact Technical Product Support.

How can I clear cache, cookies, and history in my web browser?

How can I delete my account on the Portal?

Please contact Technical Product Support and give us the following information:

  1. Would you like to close your account / delete your account permanently / delete your account and all personal data?
  2. What platform / system did you register at?
  3. What email did you use to register on the platform?
Registration and login issues
How do I retrieve my username and/or password?

  • If you know your e-mail address, you can reset your password with the use of the Forgot your password? link on the login page
  • You will receive an email which will enable you to reset your password.
  • If you have more than one account linked to the email address, you will be able to choose the one to which you have forgotten the password.

  • If you cannot remember your e-mail address or continue to have issues, please contact Technical Product Support.

Why didn’t I receive the confirmation email after registering my access code?

  • Check your email account’s Spam or Junk folder.
  • Please double check your email address when registering. If you have made a mistake in your email address, you will not receive an email with a link verifying your account. Try to repeat the process of registration.
  • You may also go to Your Account and select Verify Email Address to receive an email with a new link.

The system doesn’t want to recognize my username when I try to register on the Portal. How do I resolve this issue?

Please note that your username can contain only lowercase letters, numbers, at signs (@), underscores (_), dots (.) and dashes (-).

I get an error message when I am trying to register. How do I resolve this issue?

  • Reload the browser window and try again.
  • If possible, take a screenshot (this will help us to identify the problem), and contact Technical Product Support. Please provide us with a detailed description of the issue as well.

How do I update my profile?

  • You can change your native language, country of residence, time zone, the email address in the My Account section.

Is it necessary to have an email address?

  • Most Pearson online products require an email address during registration.
  • Pearson English Portal uses your email address to send you an account confirmation message, reset your password (in case you forgot it), and can be used to send you platform notifications.

Can I change the language of the Pearson English Portal site?

  • Yes. Click on the globe icon at the top of the page and select your preferred language.

I can not log into my account
My access code is not working. What should I do?

  • Access codes are six “words” long and should look something like this:
    XXXXXX-XXXX-XXXXX-XXXX-XXXXX-XXXX – once we have access codes configurations 
  • You need to enter the dashes as you redeem your access code.
  • Each access code can only be used once when you register. The access code is only needed to activate your product. It is not needed to sign in.
  • If you continue to have issues, please contact Technical Product Support.

I’m getting an error message when trying to register an access code. What should I do?

  • Double check if you have correctly copied the code.

I can’t add a product. How do I resolve this issue?

  • Please make sure that you have correctly copied the code.

I mistakenly lost or damaged my access code. What should I do?

  • Click Contact Us to submit a ticket.
  • Please prepare a photograph of the damaged access code or the confirmation of its purchase to include it in your message.

How do I get an access code?

  • Our purchase options are available on our preparation homepage
  • Once you click ‘Buy now’ you will go through to list your contact, address and billing information
  • Upon successful completion of payment, you will receive an order confirmation (on-screen and by email)
  • In the order confirmation will be a unique ‘Product Access Code’, a web link to access your product and instructions
  • Through the weblink you will be directed to a webpage where you be asked to register for an account and once entered you will be able to add a product using your ‘Product Access Code’.

What should I do if I purchased a wrong access code?

Where can I find the expiration date of my books?

The expiration date of your product is visible in the Products tab next to the book cover and in the overview of a particular class.

I have just completed my purchase of online practice materials. What will I receive and when will it arrive?

You will receive an email confirming the purchase with access code and link to access the purchased products. If you purchased a bundle, you will receive access codes and link to all the products in the bundle.

Teacher access expires after 36 months (3 years) after the access code is activated. 

Student access expires after 24 months (2 years) after the access code is activated.
