What are the new minimum scores for a UK student visa?
- UKBA requirement - B1 level
Students must achieve a minimum PTE Academic score of 36 across all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Why has the UKBA published a new PTE Academic minimum score requirement?
- UKBA requirement - B2 level
Students must achieve a minimum PTE Academic score of 51 across all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The scores have been changed as a result of recent discussions between Pearson and the UKBA to further examine the level of English proficiency that students must demonstrate to meet Tier 4 visa requirements. The discussions took place following feedback from institutions.
From which date will the new scores be accepted?
The new score requirement will take effect from Friday 8 July 2011
I took PTE Academic before 8 July and my score now meets the UKBA’s new criteria. Can I now submit this score to the UKBA?
Yes. The UKBA will accept the revised scores irrespective of when the test was taken, provided that the score report is still valid. PTE Academic scores are valid for two years.
To submit your score to the UKBA, you need to:
1. Print your score report and send it with your visa application to the UKBA
2. Assign your score report to the UKBA online by logging in to your account
If you have already submitted your score to the UKBA online, you do not need to submit it online again. You will still need to print the score report and send it with your visa application.
How are these new scores calculated and how do they relate to the CEF B1 and B2 levels?
We have created a guide to help institutions understand how scores relate to the CEF. You can download the guide here. It is called ‘Interpreting the PTE Academic Score Report
